Experiences of a Danish Family
Emilie - Age 11
"Before we started, I was a bit afraid that they would not understand me. But most of the things I said they did understand, and otherwise we just used signs and body-language; so it was no problem. During the day we made a lot of different recipes, but it was not hard to understand what we should do, and we had a lot of good stuff to eat. Generally I think that everyone (both the kids but also the teachers) was really nice, and it was a great experience. I wish we could do it again this year. I have also experienced that when I came back to Denmark and my own class, I had learned a lot of general words and phrases that I can use, and I am not nearly as afraid to express myself in English as I used to be."
Anne - Age 8
"In the beginning I didn't want to go because I was afraid that I would not understand anything. But my big sister was going so that helped a lot. I cried a little bit on the first day when my mom left, but the teachers were really nice, and after a short while I forgot about being afraid and just had a lot of fun. One of the girls (Monique) and I had a lot of fun together, and she was really nice helping me with everything. Some of the food was very sweet but it tasted ok, and it was fun making it. And we also played a lot outside, which was really nice because then I forgot that I was supposed to learn English - we were just having fun. After coming back home I started having English courses at school, and my teacher says that I am very good at it. I think it is because I learned a lot of different words in London that I can use at school."
Charlotte - Mom
"As a mom I was a bit nervous sending my two girls age 8 and 11 to school all alone in a foreign city. But after meeting the adults at the school I was really confident that the girls would be in safe hands - and they were. After a few butterflies the first morning, they were both very excited about going every morning, and they were happy and full of things to talk about every afternoon when I picked them up. Besides having a great time and meeting new friends, they have also benefited immensely in their English skills. They are both much more confident in expressing themself in English, and eventually that will pay off on their grades. I believe that what really did the trick with my girls was that they learned while they were playing, using various kinds of intelligens (Gardner's theories) - it didn't feel like going to school, but they sure did learn a lot."
